Why study Management, Organization & Society

This master programme in Management, Organization & Society deals with several key questions that are facing people, businesses and societies in the contemporary world of work and organizations: What is the role of business in society, and what responsibilities do business organizations have? How and why do organizations change? What is the role of power in organizations, how is power exercised to pursue or prevent change, and how are dominant relations of power and authority challenged and resisted? How do employers seek to maximize the potential and performance of employees, what effects do such efforts produce, and how can we think differently about organizational values and the things that make people in organizations valuable? Programme information

Who is this programme for?

Your curiosity for knowledge and learning is more important than the subject of your undergraduate degree. Thus, the programme is suited for students with undergraduate degrees in the humanities, in business administration or another social science subject. Whereas social science and humanities graduates will develop skills and knowledge specific to the field of management and organization, business graduates will enhance their understanding of this world by exploring it through novel perspectives beyond the field of business administration.

What you will learn

Contemporary and future organizations need employees and managers who understand the complexity of organizational life and how businesses and other organizations are embedded in larger societal contexts. Through this programme you will therefore develop a strong command of key theories and rigorous methods in management and organization studies and related fields of knowledge. By working with case studies, research projects and experimental learning activities, you will also learn to apply this knowledge and refine a range of skills that are essential for a managerial and professional career in business, government and NGOs: you will particularly strengthen your capacity for problematization and effective communication, and your ability to question and critically analyse prevailing structures and practices, established models of thought and simplistic tool-box systems. A strong appreciation for the complex nature and societal context of management and organizations is central in order to manage responsibly and effectively.

Throughout the programme you will develop these capacities by studying key concepts and theories of management, organization and society, the connection between business and society, the politics of organizational change, the social practices and power relations of entrepreneurship and leadership, the challenges of managing people within and across different cultural contexts, and qualitative research methods.

Your future career

The programme provides a solid platform for students pursuing a career in general management, HRM and management consulting, a civil service career in government institutions and agencies, or a managerial or consultancy career in the NGO sector. The programme also provides an excellent starting point for students pursuing an academic career in research and teaching.
