Semester 1
During the first semester grounds are set within the Business Administration field of study. Courses focus on principles of the four major subject areas within the field and provides a solid base for further knowledge development.
Semester 2
The second semester is envisioned to be the bridge between the social sciences and humanities, involving political and cultural perspectives in the courses.
Students should formally apply for the second semester courses via www.universityadmissions.se / www.antagning.se no later than October 15. The application should be made for "Global Business Studies", 30 credits, and students need to log in through the Stockholm University student portal to access the application for the course.
The eligibility requirement for the second semester is 15 credits in Business Administration from semester one. The eligibility will be verified before the registration for the second semester.
Semester 3
Economic History and International Political Economy
MODULE 1 – World Economic History, 7,5 credits
The course gives an overview of the main features of the economic history of the world over several millennia. An emphasis is on the time after the industrial revolution with the spread of industrialization, urbanization, the emergence of cumulative economic growth, globalization and inequality.
MODULE 2 – Economic Thought in World History, 7,5 credits
A broad overview of the history of economic thought: the development of economic theories in relation to the changes in the real-world economy with an emphasis on modern times. Theories treated during the course are those associated with e g Adam Smith, Karl Marx, J M Keynes, Joseph Schumpeter and Milton Friedman.
MODULE 3 – Business and Financial Crises, 7,5 credits
A long-term perspective is given on the history of entrepreneurship from the Middle Ages onwards. A focus is on the relationship between economic growth and economic crises to produce structural changes, including the 1873 crisis, the 1930s depression and the financial crisis of 2008.
MODULE 4 - Globalization and International Political Economy, 7,5 credits
This is an introduction to some fundamental concepts in International Political Economy (IPE). A deeper understanding is also given of the different theoretical perspectives in IPE by providing an analytical toolkit to analyze the developments and changes from a historical perspective of the following issues with greater focus on the post-War period: globalization, international economic relations, global production, global trade, global financial and monetary system, and global governance.
Semester 4
Political Science
Module 1: Political Theory, 7,5 credits
The course offers an introduction to the study of political theory. The course is thematic, focusing on central concepts and problems from a contemporary as well as historical perspective. Influential and contrasting theories about democracy, freedom, justice, power, gender, multiculturalism and globalization are explained and discussed. The course emphasizes independent analysis and evaluation of theoretical texts and political-theoretical arguments.
Module 2: International Organizations, 7,5 credits
This course gives an introduction ot the study of international organizations. The focus is on the organizational form (formal, informal, hybrid), on the types of actors (states, supranational bureaucracies, non-governmental actors) and on current challenges faced by international organizations (effectiveness, legitimacy and democracy).
Module 3: Comparative Politics, 7,5 credits
The course module aims at providing an introduction to the field of comparative politics. Key theoretical perspectives and basic concepts within the field are discussed. Different political systems - in relation to formal political institutions and informal aspects of the political order - are presented, discussed and compared. Issues of identity as well as the position of nation-states in a global context are also dealt with. The course module also includes an introduction to comparative method and to sources of knowledge about political systems.
Module 4: Security in International Relations, 7,5 credits
This course aims to provide students with different conceptual and theoretical tools in order to study
and analyze contemporary security problems and security strategies in international politics. The topics include approaches to security, concepts and notions of security, institutions of security and modern security issues globally and regionally. The course also focuses on moral and practical arguments on the nature of modern armed conflicts and violence. In addition the course will focus on the impact of ideology on foreign and security policy and how the production of threats, fears and dangers plays a vital role in the development of new security strategies.
Semester 5
During the fifth semester you can pursue your own study interest and choose from a wide range of elective courses at the university. You can even take your electives in business administration at SBS. An overview of the electives in Business Administration at SBS in autumn 2020 will be found here in the autumna 2019. Enrolment in electives in Business Administration is done through a web survey and the deadline is usually April 15.
Students who wish to study other subjects than Business Administration during their elective semester are welcome to apply for such subjects via universityadmissions.se / antagning.se. Please note that no placement is guaranteed in other courses than Business Administration electives at SBS.
If you are interested in studying abroad via exchange, you may apply via SBS or the department of Political Science. In both cases the application term is semester 4. Information about exchange opportunities via SBS can be found here. For details about exchange studies through the department of Political Science, please contact them directly. Students can also apply for exchange placement via the central International Office at Stockholm University. The application period is generally one year ahead of the exchange semester.
Semester 6
IBP students will register for the sixth semester by applying for Business Administration III via www.universityadmissions.se / www.antagning.se. The eligibility requirement is 120 credits, including 45 credits in Business Administration. Students who wish to major in Finance must also have taken 15 credits in Finance and 15 credits in Statistics. Please note: special application codes apply for IBP students, as IBP students may not necessarily have Swedish language proficiency. Students need to log in to www.universityadmissions.se / www.antagning.se through the Stockholm University student portal to access the application for the course. In order to be guaranteed placement in their selected specialization, BAPS students must meet the eligibility requirements and apply for Business Administration III with the correct programme-specific code no later than April 15 for the autumn semester or October 15 for the spring semester.
