Abstract

A value added (VA) model attempts to measure how much students have learned at school. It is basically a comparison of an entry value of students' knowledge at the time they start in a school with an exit value at the time they finish school. The difference between the students' actual and expected exit values when taking into account their entry value is the school value added. This type of measure can be used for different purposes. In the Swedish National Agency for Education's (Skolverkets) assessment, VA values - correctly used - may be one of several methods for analyzing the school system. However, it is very doubtful whether families should use VA values as a basis for choice of school.
