Abstract

Is quota sampling less ’scientific’ than stratified simple random sampling? You can easily get that impression from some textbooks. But what do we mean by ‘scientific’? And what are the assumptions behind quota sampling and stratified simple random sampling in the presence of nonresponse? I shall evaluate these two methods against a surprisingly concise definition of science by Sven Ove Hansson.
